Since it hasn&#8217;t slowed down yet, I&#8217;ll try to catch you up in short order on what&#8217;s happening with us these days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">In addition to helping extended family members with their medical situations, we&#8217;ve been dealing with one of our own. Last week we were less than thrilled to view the ultrasound image of the Baby Huey of kidney stones. He wasn&#8217;t bouncing, either, which could make his birth somewhat difficult. Foxx<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">I finally received U.S. Representative Virginia Foxx&#8217;s response to the letter I mailed to her on <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">January<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> 23<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">, the Monday after President Donald J. Trump&#8217;s inauguration. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Though her letter was dated March 8<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">, I didn&#8217;t receive it until the last week of the month. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">I <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">had expressed concern over growing support for charter schools at the expense of public schools since Mrs. Foxx is, in fact, chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. I had also stated my concern about Mr. Trump&#8217;s ill treatment of the news media and about his dishonesty, as I encouraged Mrs. Foxx <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">to support our First Amendment freedom of the press, and<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">&nbsp;\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">to hold Mr. Trump and his staff to the truth, and to demand that he stop lying to the American people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_404\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-404\" style=\"width: 411px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gaillardiapress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_20170403_081758.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-404\" src=\"http:\/\/gaillardiapress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_20170403_081758-300x149.jpg\" alt=\"Rep. Foxx&#8217;s office responded with a personal letter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">To her credit as a public servant, Mrs. Foxx sent me what appears to be a personal letter that addresses in sufficient detail every concern I expressed. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Her two-page response is much more substantive than what I received a month ago from Sen. Thom Tillis. I still haven&#8217;t heard from Sen. Richard Burr, who presumably is busy investigating the president&#8217;s Russian connections, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">or from Mr. Trump himself, who undoubtedly is playing golf at one of his luxury resorts. No, eschewing social media isn&#8217;t part of my Lenten observance this year. I&#8217;m still using Twitter to keep up with the Braves, Yankees, Crawdads, MerleFest, James Taylor, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Steve Forbert, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">local weather and road conditions, and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Downtown Morganton events, among other generally non-controversial subjects. And, no, leaving Facebook wasn&#8217;t about you; it was about me. I found that I was spending too much time reading impersonal Facebook posts and strangers&#8217; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">hateful <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">comments, and that I was feeling worse about life after reading all that negativity, whether I agreed with <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">the gist<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> of it or not. It might not have turned me into a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">n Internet<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> troll <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">myself<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">, but I was starting to feel like one <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">in real life<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">. This would be my twelfth novel and the fifth that Timberley and I have co-authored. Only one <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">of our novels<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"><i>Night Lights; or, Golf, the Blues and the Brown Mountain Light<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">2004<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">)\u2014has been published, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">and it&#8217;s now out of print<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Timberley and I have been discussing and researching this new novel for a couple of months now, and we&#8217;re excited about the story as well as about the entire project. Timberley is feeling better today as the doctor&#8217;s prescriptions have relieved some of her discomfort. The Atlanta Braves\u2014the baseball team I&#8217;ve followed since the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">six<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">th grade\u2014haven&#8217;t lost a single game yet \u2026 since their first game of the new season is this afternoon against the New York Mets. Caldwell County&#8217;s favorite son, San Francisco Giants pitching ace Madison Bumgarner, is the M<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">LB<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> home run leader after his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"><i>two<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> dingers in yesterday&#8217;s Opening Day game. And tonight the UNC Tar Heels, the sports team I&#8217;ve followed longer than any other\u2014since the fourth grade <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">when my first sports hero Charles Scott was an all-American<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">\u2014plays for the NCAA basketball championship <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">against the Gonzaga Bulldogs<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Though they got the top seed in the South Region, I&#8217;ve been surprised that Carolina\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"><i>North<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> Carolina, that is\u2014made the Final Four and tonight has a chance to win the national title. I didn&#8217;t think they could play consistently enough\u2014and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">make their dad-gum <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">free throws\u2014to advance very far in the NCAA tournament. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">I figured they&#8217;d go down about the way Duke did, even though a UNC-Duke national championship game would have given \u201cBlue Heaven\u201d new meaning. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Somewhat superstitious, Timberley and I have respected the streak, however, and have grilled chicken with Heinz Carolina vinegar-based BBQ sauce on game days lately. That practice started <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">before the UNC-Kentucky game <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">when we noticed that Heinz also carrie<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\"> Kentucky Bourbon BBQ sauce <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">a mustard-based <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">(South) <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">Carolina BBQ sauce with a maroon label. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">If UNC were facing USC tonight, we&#8217;d be hard-pressed to know which Carolina sauce to use on the chicken. But I don&#8217;t think the Food Lion meat counter carries gamecock, anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif,serif;\">You&#8217;ll forgive me if I close out this column now. We have a doctor&#8217;s appointment this afternoon. And we need to stop by the grocery store for more chicken and light blue label Carolina sauce. Until next time, take care.
