Just when I begin to think David might have an ounce of humanity in him after all, his next psalm goes off the deep end \u2014 or maybe it\u2019s just the psalmist he chose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Violence, xenophobia, paranoia \u2014 this psalm has it all, as if David hasn\u2019t covered that ground umpteen times before. In fact, the psalmist plagiarizes umpteen other psalms to write this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best lines here \u2014 also copied from other psalms \u2014 are the Q &amp; A: \u201cLord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?\u201d; then, \u201cMan is like a breath; \/ His days are like a passing shadow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The psalmist closes by listing the many things that would make him happy \u2014 healthy sons and daughters (stacked like \u201cpillars\u201d), full barns and fields, no break-ins, and no rioting in the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHappy are the people who are in such a state,\u201d the psalmist says, surely not referring to Florida or Texas. \u201cHappy are the people whose God is the Lord!\u201d There again, that\u2019s treading a fine line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, here we go again.
