This psalm\u2019s superscription is \u201cA Contemplation of David. A Prayer when he was in the cave\u201d \u2014 like when Tom and Becky, or Andy and Helen were trapped in caves and needed to be rescued.

Those fictional folks, though, were together in the dark, and the shepherd boy who would be the king was all alone \u2014 that is, until he cried out to YHWH and was joined by about 400 other men.

The cave then became David\u2019s fortress and the rebels became his army as they overthrew King Saul. But this prayer reveals young David\u2019s dark thoughts in solitude while his fate is undecided.

\u201cI pour out my complaint before [the Lord],\u201d David says. \u201cI declare before Him my trouble.\u201d So it\u2019s OK to gripe when stuff doesn\u2019t go our way? And again he resorts to a tired old \u201csnare\u201d metaphor.

\u201cDeliver me from my persecutors,\u201d prays Dave of the Cave, \u201cFor they are stronger than I.\u201d I\u2019ll bet he wouldn\u2019t have said that out loud if he\u2019d been alone with Becky or Helen \u2014 or with Bathsheba.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
