This is another psalm that\u2019s often quoted, with lines like: \u201cBless the Lord, O my soul, \/ And forget not all His benefits\u201d; and \u201cAs a father pities his children, \/ So the Lord pities those who fear Him.\u201d

There are several other well-known passages in this psalm, but that\u2019s part of the problem. When we read an isolated verse or hear one shouted from the pulpit, we aren\u2019t getting the whole story.

For example, \u201c[t]he Lord is merciful and gracious, \/ Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.\u201d OK. But in other psalms, YHWH is said to be jealous, wrathful and even indignant toward good men.

In this psalm, YHWH is described as a god \u201cWho forgives all your iniquities, \/ Who heals all your diseases, \/ Who redeems your life from destruction,\u201d and so forth \u2014 until, of course, He doesn\u2019t.

That, as many theologians say, is YAH\u2019s biggest public relations problem \u2014 explaining why bad things happen to good people. \u201cAs for man, his days are like grass,\u201d and YAH is the lawnmower.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
