Can a whole bushel of believers in one thing or another\u2014 even believers in nothing \u2014 be rotten to the core? Can any group be characterized as \u201c[t]here is none who does good, \/ No, not one\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, then it\u2019s a hop, skip and jump to ethnic \u201ccleansing,\u201d exterminating \u201cvermin\u201d and annihilating \u201cthreat[s] from within.\u201d Other words for what happens when people are considered worthless are pogrom, holocaust and genocide. It has happened before; it could be happening now and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGod looks down from heaven upon the children of men,\u201d the psalmist says, \u201c[t]o see if there are any who understand, who seek God.\u201d Does that one man, one woman, one innocent child count if they\u2019re searching for an answer to life\u2019s questions? Or not? Who do we think we are, anyway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At our little cottage on the hill \u2014 Casita Loma, I like to call it \u2014 there\u2019s more poison oak and ivy, devil\u2019s walking stick and regular briar, honeysuckle and wisteria vines, mimosa and Judas trees than anywhere I know.
